ATHENA NORTHBOUND - SINGAPORE, Singapore City Tour

An orientation tour of the fascinating city of Singapore. This tour reveals both the old and the modern Singapore. See the city�s colonial district in its heritage and in all its splendour driving past Parliament House. The statue of the Sir Stamford Raffles, which stands guard at the Singapore River, where he was believed to have first landed and discovered Singapore in 1819.
From here, we visit Raffles Hotel, one of the Singapore�s most famous icons and one of the grand hotels of the Orient opened in 1887. Stroll the grounds of the hotel and you may wish to sip a Singapore Sling (at your own expense), where this drink was invented.
In Chinatown, visit interesting Chinese shop houses and the Sri Mariamman Temple with its colourful fa�ade and the Gopuram.
Next we visit Little India. This busy area is filled with narrow streets and shop houses selling everything from sari to temple garlands and intricate ornaments.
Finally, capture a bird�s eye view of the world�s busiest port from Mount Faber. From the height of over 300 feet, you can see the oil refineries on the offshore islands, reflecting Singapore�s position as one of the world�s larges petroleum refining centres.

ATHENA NORTHBOUND - SINGAPORE, Round Island Tour

This tour offers an interesting insight into life outside the city. The tour starts with a visit to the Tiong Bahru �wet� Market, where you can see how locals do their daily marketing. You will get to taste some local freshly cut fruits.
Next, we proceed to Kranji Dam, once a swampy area used as the first landing spot for Japanese Advance Boats during World War II. From there, you can also get a clear view of Johore Bahru.
We proceed to Kranji War Memorial. Unveiled in 1957, the memorial overlooking the Straits of Johore, is the last resting place for many of the allied soldiers who lost their lives in World War II. It commemorates by name over 20,000 men and women of the forces who have no known grave. A Chinese lunch will be served at a restaurant.
After lunch, we continue the tour with a visit to the Bright Hill Temple, a famous Chinese ancestral worship place. The final loop of the tour will bring you to Changi, passing the Johore Battery built by the British in 1939 to view a replica "Monster Gun", one of the largest guns installed outside Great Britain during World War II. The last stop is Changi Chapel & Museum, where you will visit the museum and a replica of the chapel used by POW during World War II. Drive through Changi Village en route back to the pier.

The Jurong Bird Park, in 20 hectares of landscaped ground, has amassed over 8,000 exotic birds of 600 species, from all over the world. Even as you enter, talkative and brilliantly coloured macaws chatter and fuss. Ride the panorail �train� which enables you to cover more ground for an overview of the park, then explore on your own during this unstructured outing. In the world�s largest aviary, Asian and African birds fly freely in a tropical rain forest environment. This full-day tour offers the opportunity to discover one of Thailand's most spectacular sceneries. The seascape of Phang Nga Bay is nothing short of magical. Begin your day with the drive to the north of the island, where you will cross to the mainland via the Thep Krasettree Causeway (the new causeway parallel to the old Sarasin Causeway).
At the Rubber Plantation watch a demonstration of �rubber-tapping� where the product is extracted from rubber trees in its natural form. From there is processed into the many forms we use on a daily basis. While tourism is Phuket�s primary source of income, the rubber industry is a close second largest income earner.
Upon arrival at Phang Nga Bay you will switch to a motorboat and begin an unforgettable cruise through the surrealist landscape of limestone stacks. Their dramatic colouring of ochre and amber hues contrasts vividly with the startling blue of the water. The awesome scenery of Phang Nga Bay is well worth the trip. While exploring this wondrous region, distinct points of interest stand out.
Popularly known as James Bond Island, it was here where the filming of the last scenes of �The Man with the Golden Gun� took place. The boat will approach to the island for photo taking.
You will also have a chance to visit Koh Panyi, a water village where more than 200 houses are built on stilts with attached wooden walkways.

A scenic drive will show you Phuket�s most interesting sights, lush tropical vegetation and shimmering white beaches.
Visit a Cashew Nut Factory. Cashew nut tree is originated in the rain forest. In 1901, the former governor general of Phuket brought the seeds of cashew nut into the Southern territory of Siam Kingdom. Since then, this crop had widely cultivated and developed to thrive throughout the Kingdom. There, you will watch a process of cashew nut products, such as skilled workers cracking nutshells to create a mouth watering variety of snacks and sweets. Taste the various types of snacks and sweet made on the premises.
You will have a brief orientation and a panoramic view from Rang Hill. A small hill located northeast of the town, offering a fascinating view of Phuket City. Inside the park there are a fitness park, restaurants and a rest area. The statue of the Governor of Phuket between 1890 and 1909 is also situated here. Located 3.5 miles south of Phuket town is Wat Chalong Monastery. This impressive temple is Phuket�s largest and most sacred. It is best known for its gold leaf encrusted statues of three former abbots. One of them, Luang Por Chem, was especially respected for his medical skills and magical powers, which he successfully used when Phuket was attacked by army of Chinese at the turn of the century.
Take a scenic drive along the beach road for a view of Phuket�s main beaches and their resort hotels, Karon and Patong Beaches. Before returning to the ship, a stop for shopping will be made at the souvenir centre for handicrafts, cultured pearl, precious stones, etc.

ATHENA NORTHBOUND - COLOMBO, Kelaniya Temple & Pinnawela

Drive to Kelaniya and visit the Kelaniya Temple. Visit the Kelaniya Rajamaha Vihare built in the 3rd century. Kelaniya is one of the three places in the island, visited by Buddha. Kelaniya is also a centre of traditional Sinhala pottery. Thereafter proceed to Pinnawela.
Lunch will be served at a restaurant (drinks included: one mineral water / one soft drink and tea/coffee). After lunch visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975, commenced with seven orphans. Today some of these orphans enjoy the fortune of seeing their grandchildren born in the same location. The original objective of establishing the orphanage inclined more towards tourism, but is soon became a conservation and educational centre. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawela started a scientific captive-breeding programme for elephants. The free movement of the herd enhanced the chances for respective individuals of both sexes to get together and mate. The nearby river played a dominant role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawela was born. The success story of Pinnawela has drawn the attention of scientists from all over the world. Watch them being fed or bathing in the river. Thereafter return to Colombo.

Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and comfortable walking shoes are recommended as to see the Elephant Orphanage; some walking is involved (approx. 250 yards / 228 meters).
Elephants in Pinnawela are not fully tamed. Visitors should not get too close to the animals.
Proper attire is required to visit the sacred sites. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Women must have their shoulders covered. Shoes and hats must be removed prior to entering the temples. We suggest bringing along a pair of thick socks because the pavement will be hot.

ATHENA NORTHBOUND - COLOMBO, Colombo World Wars & Ceylon

Departure from the pier and to start your city tour of Colombo
Visit The Cenotaph War Memorial in Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo. It is dedicated to the men and women from Ceylon died during the two world wars, it comprises a Cenotaph and Memorial Walls. It was originally built in the 1920s to remember both Ceylonese and Europeans from Ceylon who were killed in the Great War, was constructed at the Galle Face Green. It was dismantled and re-erected at Victoria Park, during World War II after fears that the Japanese might use it as a marker to direct their artillery.
Transfer to Colombo National Museum, the national museum was converted into the army command. The army paymaster operated from here. Also it converted into hospital and barrack.
Thereafter proceed to The Race Course grounds in Colombo; the Ceylon R.A.F. had only 20 planes as against that of 120 planes of Mitsuo Funchido. These 20 fighter planes got off from the Race Course grounds in Colombo. You will then witness one of the war cemeteries in Colombo. There are six Commonwealth war cemeteries in Sri Lanka, four in Colombo, one in the hill capital Kandy and one in Trincomalee. Other Commonwealth war casualties rest in Jawatte Muslim Cemetery, Kuppiyawatte Muslim Cemetery, handy Civil Cemetery, George E. De Silva Park in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya Holy Trinity Churchyard. Thereafter return to the Pier.

Departing from the pier, your first stop will be to visit the Gold Souq with opportunity for shopping before going to Al Husn souq.
Al Husn souq, the old souq where Frankincense crystals, Dhofari traditional clothes, cosmetics and typical Dhofari Frankincense burners are sold.
You will then drive to visit the archaeological site of Al Balid museum that displays the region�s archaeology, history and heritage. Last stop will be at Shanfari Mosque (outside visit only) to take photographs before reaching the port.

ATHENA NORTHBOUND - SALALAH, West Salalah

Dhofar was renowned for Frankincense trade in ancient times. You may even come across camels roaming alongside the roadway as you venture into what is called the Dhofar region of Oman. In this region you will see the contrast of lush coconut plantations, freshwater springs, with desert and rugged landscapes.
First you will drive towards West of Salalah which has many stretches of beautiful beaches and Mughsayl is one of the most popular among these because of the Blow Holes in the rocky shelf close to the shore. With some luck, you may be able to witness the spray of water gushing out of these natural holes in the rock face. These holes display dramatic bursts of water and sometimes the foam reaches 15 metres in the air. Then you will stop to smell the aroma of the Frankincense trees, from here you will drive to see the Prophet Job�s tomb perched high up in the Jebels.
The last stop is at Al Husn souq where you will spend some free time for shopping. Al Husn souq, the old souq where Frankincense crystals, Dhofari traditional clothes and cosmetics and typical Dhofari Frankincense burners are sold. Return to the ship.

ATHENA NORTHBOUND - AQABA, Petra
A � Petra (Full day with buffet lunch) � approx. 10 hrs.

The ancient rose red City of Petra is a Nabataean capital carved in stone. The city has numerous monuments including tombs, theatres, obelisks, high places, temples, and churches among others. The City is carved in red sandstone that is amazing to look at.
The tour of Petra begins with a walk into the city through a narrow gorge call the �Siq�. This stunning natural canyon winds through the towering rock towards the city. You will see water channels, carvings, and representations of Nabataean gods and alters where incense was burnt as offerings.
Khazneh, the infamous �Treasury� is an ancient tomb carved into the cliff face. Local legend was that treasure was hidden in the urn at the top and so bullet marks are now evidence of treasure seekers attempts at finding it. It is believed that the Roman Theatre was in fact carved out by the Nabataeans and not the Romans in the 2nd century b.C The theatre seats 3000 persons.
The Royal Tombs are carved into the face of Jebel Khubtha and consist of the Urn tomb, the Corinthian tomb and the three storied Palace tomb.
Leading west is the main street of Petra, which once boasted numerous stately columns along its route. At the end of the street to the left of the path is the partly restored Qasr Al Bint (Temple of Dushara). It is the only freestanding structure in Petra and is thought to have been the main place of worship in the Nabataean City. Buffet lunch (incl. mineral water and tea/coffee) will be served at an international hotel outside the site. After lunch, limited time for souvenir shopping will be allocated before you commence the return drive to Aqaba (approx. 2 hours).

When visiting Petra it is advisable to wear a hat, a light long � sleeved shirt or top to protect the arms and the shoulders and very comfortable and non slippery shoes. Wearing sun block is highly recommended, as you will be out in the sun most of the day. Natural fibber clothing highly recommended, as the temperature at the site can be different from Aqaba, carry as well a woollen.
This tour requires physical effort and involves a considerable amount of walking over uneven or steep terrain. Bottled water advisable.
The ride from Aqaba takes approximately 2 hrs. Coaches are toilet equipped.
There are three bathroom stops on this tour. The first is at the beginning of the tour at the visitor�s centre at the coach park. The second is an hour and a half away, halfway through the site. The last is at the end of the main tour at the restaurant (another hour away).
The initial 10 minute walk to the �Siq� is a gentle descent on reasonably even terrain. Entering the Siq one encounters the �most� difficult descend of the entire route for about 300 metres due to the uneven gravel and packed sand. Reaching the Treasury, the terrain remains rough and uneven and participants should be prepared to spend approximately 4 hours on their feet at the site, from beginning to end.
At the end of the visit, the return to the coach park is the same way as the descend.
This tour is not suitable for wheelchair guests.
Not advisable to leave anything on the coaches during the visit to the site as they will be locked and drivers take a rest for 2 hours.
There are small shops just outside the Visitors Centre and inside the site.
Products: Nabataean style pottery, silverware, sand bottles, beadwork jewellery and various other local handicrafts and textiles. Credit cards are not used inside the site.

Feel the romance of the Arabian Desert. Timeless and hauntingly beautiful valley: Wadi Rum, the largest and most magnificent of Jordan�s desert landscapes.
In this sublime place, the uniquely shaped massive mountains raise out of the rose-red desert sand. Geologists think Wadi Rum resulted from a great crack on the surface of the earth caused by an enormous upheaval. Some of the ridges are a thousand feet high and are topped with domes worn smooth by the desert winds. The Wadi Rum area has been inhabited since prehistoric periods. Throughout the valley are scattered slabs of rock with inscriptions in early Talmudic writings. Fresh water springs made Wadi Rum a meeting centre for caravans heading towards Syria and Palestine from Arabia. This was the stunning backdrop used in the film� Lawrence of Arabia�. It was an inspiration for T.E. Lawrence and the rallying point for the start of the Great Arab Revolt. It is also the home of several Bedouin tribes that maintain the warm hospitality, which characterizes true Arab culture. Wadi Rum today is a protected natural reserve. After one hour 15 minutes ride you will arrive to Wadi Rum. From here your mode of transport changes to a four wheel drive jeep for a two hour drive through magnificent desert scenery. Mineral water, Arabic tea and delicacy will be served at a Bedouin camp before you re-board your waiting motor coach for the return trip to Aqaba (approx. 1h15).

Valletta, the 16th century capital of Malta built after the Great Seige of 1565 by French Grandmaster Jean de la Vallette of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
At the Upper Barakka Gardens, enjoy a panoramic view over the Grand Harbour. These beautiful gardens, recently restored, contain many sculptures and monuments to Maltese history. The Cathedral of the Knights of St. John (Interior visit) is one of the most historically important monuments in Malta. It was built between 1573 and 1577 by the Engineer of the Order Gerolamo Cassar. The floor is inlaid with brilliant marble tombstones. An intensive tour of this magnificent church with its fine art treasures includes a special visit to the Oratory to see Malta�s most valuable work of art � �The Beheading of St. John� painted by Renaissance artist Caravaggio in 1607. The Limestone Heritage � a stunning audio-visual experience set in an old limestone quarry. For generations all Maltese buildings have been built with Maltese limestone rock � the island is composed almost entirely of limestone rock formations.
The tour starts with a multi-language audiovisual presentation during which visitors will learn about the history of extracting and working limestone from the beginning of time till the present day. This is followed by a walk through the exhibition inside the quarry that shows all manner of tools and stonework. A well stocked souvenir shop completes this wonderful experience.
The tiny seaside fishing village of Wied iz-Zurrieq lies on Malta�s rugged south coast. This is the home of the famous Blue Grotto, a huge natural cave set into the sheer cliffs. Lovers of archaeology will be in their element in this half-day excursion to the nearby Etruscan ruins of Tarquinia, a little village overlooking the sea beyond Civitavecchia.
Tarquinia, founded in 449 B.C., was once the most powerful city in Etruria before being defeated by the Roman Empire. In medieval times the little town grew in importance and this is still evident from the lovely palaces and narrow street that spill out into quaint squares.
The beautiful 15th century Palazzo Vitelleschi contains a wealth of Etruscan treasures. The 3 story museums contain one of the most extensive collections of Etruscan artefacts in the world.
Of particular note are the golden terracotta horses, which gave us an idea of the remarkable degree of artistry that the Etruscan reached. The collection also includes some sarcophagi found in the necropolis. Just outside the town is an underground tomb site dating from 7th to 2nd centuries B.C. Passengers will admire the numerous tombs with wall decorations that constitute the most complete documentation of the development of frescoes in Etruscan times.
After the visit passengers will be driven back to the pier.

The scenic Cote d'Azur - seen the easy way! There's very little walking involved in this tour, which begins along the Lower Corniche - the coastal road closest to the sea.
This scenic Riviera route passes Beaulieu and little Eze-Sur-Mer, sheltered beneath the cliffs, then cuts through Monaco along the Grand Prix circuit up to the Exotic Garden for a photo stop. Further to the Hotel Vista Palace where we join the Grand Corniche - the highest of the coastal roads, for perfect panoramas en route to La Turbie, 480 metres above sea level and with simply spectacular views.
The Middle Corniche is equally unforgettable, and we'll stop for a restroom and photo stop at the bottom of the isolated village of Eze (427metres alt.).
Nice is next, for a brief sightseeing tour of the town before returning to the ship.

Departure towards the centre of Lisbon, a lively and interesting modern capital which contains many historic buildings, squares and picturesque quarters.
Rossio is Lisbon�s main square, and the mile-long Avenue of Liberty leads up to the statue of the Marquis of Pombal, who had the city rebuilt after the disastrous earthquake of 1755.
We proceed to the old part of the city to pay a visit to St George�s Castle, an 8th century Moorish Castle. We descend by foot through Alfama Quarter and then drive in direction to Belem Quarter, to visit the Hieronymites Monastery, a 16th century masterpiece in the Gothic-Manueline style, World Heritage Monument.
Close to the monastery, you will have the chance to taste the famous �Past�is de Bel�m� (small custard tart), a typical Portuguese pastry, with sugar and cinnamon.
Nearby we will admire the Belem Tower exterior, from where the Portuguese explorers were given a rousing send-off, and the Monument to the Discoveries, built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry � the Navigator, the mastermind behind Portugal�s voyages of exploration and subsequent wealth.
We will then return to the ship, stretching along River Tagus, where you will see the huge and graceful 25th April Bridge built following the lines of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The west region of Portugal allows you to know �bidos, one of the most important patrimonial masterpieces of Portugal. We leave Lisbon heading westward in direction to �bidos (approx. 90 km / 1h30 drive via the highway). Enjoy a scenic drive trough the Portuguese countryside that leads to the medieval town of �bidos inside fortified walls, dating back to 308 b.C. Since the day that King Dinis (Denis) gave the town to his young bride, �bidos has been the token wedding gift to all Portugal�s queens. You will feel as if you are travelling back in time as you explore the picturesque streets. During the guided walking tour, you will visit the 17th-century Parish Church of Santa Maria, with its magnificent interior decorations in blue and white tiles and the picturesque Pillory Square.
You will then have the opportunity to taste the famous �Ginginha� (cherry liqueur) at a typical caf� in �bidos. We finally return to Lisbon via the same way to rejoin the ship.
